Breast augmentation & reduction

Breast augmentation and breast reduction are two common types of plastic surgery procedures that focus on altering the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Let’s take a closer look at each procedure:

  1. Breast Augmentation: Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the size and fullness of the breasts. This is achieved by inserting breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles.

Types of breast implants: a. Saline implants: These implants are filled with sterile saltwater solution. b. Silicone implants: These implants consist of silicone gel, which closely resembles the feel of natural breast tissue. c. Gummy bear implants: These are a type of silicone implant that maintains its shape even if the shell is broken.

Candidates for breast augmentation:

  • Women who desire larger breasts or want to restore lost breast volume after weight loss, pregnancy, or aging.
  • Individuals with asymmetrical breasts (uneven breast size).
  • Women who have undergone mastectomy and wish to reconstruct their breasts.
  1. Breast Reduction: Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to decrease the size and weight of overly large breasts. The surgery involves removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a more proportionate breast size.

Candidates for breast reduction:

  • Women with large, heavy breasts that cause physical discomfort, such as back, neck, or shoulder pain.
  • Individuals who experience skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts.
  • Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts and desire a more balanced body contour.

Both breast augmentation and breast reduction surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and typically involve incisions on the breasts. The surgeon will determine the most suitable incision pattern based on individual factors such as breast size, shape, and desired outcome.

Recovery: The recovery period for both procedures can vary depending on the extent of the surgery. Patients usually experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising following the operation. They may need to wear a supportive surgical bra during the healing process. Most individuals can return to their daily activities gradually within a few weeks, although it may take several months for the final results to be fully apparent.
