Cancer reconstruction (Onco plastic reconstruction)

It’s a specialized surgical approach used in the management of cancer, particularly in breast cancer. It combines the principles of oncology (cancer surgery) with those of plastic and reconstructive surgery to achieve both complete cancer removal and aesthetically pleasing reconstruction of the affected area.

The primary goal of onco-plastic reconstruction is to remove the cancerous tissue while preserving as much of the normal appearance and function of the affected body part as possible. This approach is especially important in cases of breast cancer, where maintaining the appearance of the breast is crucial for a patient’s quality of life and psychological well-being.

Here are some key points about onco-plastic reconstruction:

  1. Multidisciplinary Approach: Onco-plastic surgery involves a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including surgical oncologists, plastic surgeons, and often radiation oncologists and medical oncologists. This team collaborates to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual patient.

  2. Tumor Removal: The surgical oncologist is responsible for removing the cancerous tissue. Depending on the size and location of the tumor, the surgeon may use techniques such as lumpectomy (removal of the tumor and a small portion of surrounding tissue) or mastectomy (removal of the entire breast).

  3. Reconstruction Techniques: The plastic surgeon then employs various reconstruction techniques to restore the appearance of the breast after tumor removal. This can involve using breast implants, autologous tissue (flaps of tissue from the patient’s own body), or a combination of both.

  4. Timing of Reconstruction: The timing of reconstruction can vary. Immediate reconstruction is performed during the same surgical session as the tumor removal, while delayed reconstruction is done at a later date, often after additional cancer treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy.

  5. Benefits of Onco-Plastic Reconstruction: Onco-plastic surgery offers several advantages, including improved cosmetic outcomes, enhanced psychological well-being, and reduced need for additional surgeries.

  6. Candidate Selection: Not all patients are suitable candidates for onco-plastic reconstruction. The feasibility of this approach depends on factors such as the stage of cancer, the size and location of the tumor, the patient’s overall health, and individual preferences.
